Smoke coming out of the SSR

I just got my kit a couple of days ago, just installed it and something is wrong.

When I first turned it on, the "hot water setting" did not work. The boiler stayed at room temp for several minutes. At this point I knew there was something wrong but I didn't think it was very serious.

I turned on the steam button and the boiler turned on. It seemed fine and it got the boiler to ~250F before I turned off the steam setting, but I left the machine on. I left the room for a couple minutes and noticed a burning smell. There was smoke coming out of the machine. I turned it off, and started troubleshooting.

On the controller:

I measure about 0 ohms resistance between terminals 6 and 7 that are jumped.

I measure about 110 ohms resistance between 7 and 8 that are across the RTD sensor.

I measure about ~7mega ohms across 9 and 10.

I measure 27 ohms across 1 and 2.

I didn't measure resistance across terminals on the SSR, it's harder to get to.

Here's a video of smoke coming out of the SSR as soon as I turn the machine on:

Here are a few photos of the work:

Any help?

I guess I should probably go through the docs in the faulty SSR post on the same page.

The first doc for diagnosing a problem doesn't seem relevant, but the second part of testing an SSR I can try later. How do you recommend wiring the SSR to an outlet? I might have a power cord around somewhere I can cannibalize.

Your SSR wiring is wrong.

Here is the correct wiring. Thick red wires are on output terminals. Thin red and white wire are on input terminals.

Your wiring is reversed. You put thick red wires on the input terminals. These two thick wires are connected to your boiler with 120V AC power. Once you connected these two red wires on the SSR input, the SSR will go bad in couple seconds.

The input and output circuits of SSR are isolated, so your controller should be still in good condition.

Your kit is basic kit, and it only regulates the brew temperature. So that is the reason why your steam function still functions.
